Fifth Graders Stay Overnight at SLS with Nature’s Classroom

Laura Jones, Fifth Grade Science and CS&E Teacher
In October, SLS fifth grade students and faculty participated in a Nature’s Classroom overnight, where they had a wonderful time exploring the natural world and bonding with one another. Students expanded their science knowledge by participating in multiple field classes, including aquatic biology, orienteering, endangered animals, and mad science. From protecting “endangered” eggs to making Alka-Seltzer rockets to a simulation running their own country and controlling natural resources, students participated in hands-on explorations to learn more about the world around them and how they play a role in impacting their communities.

The adventure didn’t stop there! As night fell, the groups explored making fires with steel wool, discovered how their eyes adjust to darkness, and created sparks in their mouths with Life Savers. They also shared plenty of laughs and connected through friendly games of bowling and arcade games, making s’mores at the firepit, and singing and dancing along with Mrs. Chuta before heading into the school for a lock-in. The beautiful weather and fun experiences allowed students to get outside and gain a deeper understanding of science while creating lifelong memories and strengthening the fifth-grade community.
